Initiated in Sivas upon the call of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, sunflower farming doubled its production area, reaching a total size of 190 thousand decares in 2026.

Production Area Doubled in Sivas

In Sivas, known as Turkey's grain silo, sunflower production adapted to the soil structure and land conditions continues to increase every passing year.

The total cultivation area, which was 98 thousand decares last year, reached a size of 190 thousand decares in the 2026 season.

Increase in Oilseed and Confectionery Varieties

Oilseed sunflower cultivation, which was carried out on 75 thousand decares in the city in 2025, reached the level of 100 thousand decares in 2026.

As for confectionery sunflower, the cultivation area of 23 thousand decares in 2025 was recorded as 90 thousand decares this year.

Expected Yield and Harvest Amounts

As a result of favorable climate conditions, this season it is expected to harvest 16 thousand tons of oilseed sunflower and 19 thousand tons of confectionery sunflower.

It is stated that had it not been for excessive rainfall, the cultivation areas and yield could have reached much higher levels.

Evaluations from the Chamber of Agriculture

Sivas Chamber of Agriculture Board Chairman Hacı Çetindağ stated that farmers did not remain indifferent to the problems that arose after the pandemic.

Çetindağ emphasized that sunflowers, a foreign product, were successfully planted in Sivas in order to contribute to the country's economy.

Support Provided by Institutions

It was conveyed that the seeds distributed to farmers by the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry have a significant share in the increase in production.

Thanks to seed support that will be continued in coming years, it is anticipated that the yield will rise even further.
