Japan's Defense Budget Focuses on AI, Drones and Missiles
Japan's Ministry of Defense has requested an 8.9 trillion yen budget for the new fiscal year to adapt to changing warfare methods and enhance deterrence.
Japan's Ministry of Defense announced that it has requested a budget of 8.9 trillion yen, or approximately $55.6 billion, for the upcoming fiscal year. The disclosed plan aims to strengthen the country's defense strategies with unmanned aerial vehicles, artificial intelligence, and next-generation missiles.
Details of the Budget Request
According to details shared by Japan's Ministry of Defense, the preliminary total of 8.9 trillion yen requested for the upcoming fiscal year marks a slight increase compared to the 8.8 trillion yen requested this year.
The final details of the budget are expected to be finalized later in the year after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government approves the new security and defense strategy.
New Warfare Methods and Strategy
Within the framework of the five-year defense strategy established in 2022, Japan doubled its defense spending to approximately 2 percent of its gross domestic product.
The ministry aims to significantly increase deterrence and response capacity against China's increasingly assertive posture.
Unmanned Systems and Personnel Reduction
The Japanese military plans to integrate new combat techniques such as attack drones, long-range cruise missiles, and interception systems.
To compensate for the shrinking military personnel count due to an aging population and to lower costs, unmanned weapons and domestically developed low-cost systems will be utilized.
Artificial Intelligence and Command Control Systems
The ministry plans to introduce an integrated artificial intelligence platform, including an AI orchestrator and a Ministry of Defense cloud, to enhance the speed and accuracy of command and control.
These technological investments aim to accelerate decision-making processes in military operations.
Domestic Defense Industry and Production
The budget request also includes supporting the domestic defense industry through a government-owned, contractor-operated system to guarantee stable equipment production and procurement.
