NASA's $4.3 billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has been sent into orbit to solve the mystery of dark energy, which causes the universe to expand at an accelerating rate.
Named after the space agency's first chief astronomer, the giant observatory was successfully launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
History and Technical Specifications
The giant 2.4-meter primary mirror forming the heart of the telescope was originally developed by the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office for a spy satellite.
Equipped with a 300-megapixel infrared camera, the telescope offers the ability to image areas hundreds of times wider than Hubble in a single frame.
Collaboration with Other Telescopes
The Roman Space Telescope will map the sky alongside the European Space Agency's Euclid telescope and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile.
Performing infrared observations, the telescope will work in full coordination with the James Webb Space Telescope to detect supernova explosions and new planets.
Scientific Goals and Expectations
Cosmologists aim to reconstruct the past expansion rate of the universe using the 3D galaxy maps that the Roman telescope will provide.
The telescope, heading to the L2 point 1.5 million kilometers away from Earth, is expected to send its first data and images in December.
