Young Ruler of Uganda's Tooro Kingdom, Oyo Nyimba, Passes Away

King Oyo Nyimba, the leader of Uganda's ancient Tooro kingdom who captured global attention by ascending the throne as an infant, has passed away at the age of 34.

Passing of King Oyo Announced

Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Rwomiire Akiiki officially announced that King Oyo Nyimba has passed away. The prime minister stated that the continuity of the royal throne is guaranteed and that a prince has been left as heir in accordance with traditions.

A Living Legend Who Ascended the Throne as a Child

King Oyo was crowned in 1995 at just three years old following his father's death. Holding the title of the world's youngest monarch and winning the deep affection of his people, the leader governed the kingdom through regents until he reached the age of 18.

Cultural Heritage and the Role of the Tooro Kingdom

Ancient kingdoms in Uganda were banned following independence, but were restored to their former status in 1993. These kings, who hold no political authority, serve as custodians of tribal culture.
