ChatGPT to face tougher regulation in the EU

Classified as a Very Large Online Search Engine under the European Union's Digital Services Act, ChatGPT will be subject to stricter regulations regarding the protection of minors, mental health, and the fight against illegal content.

New Classification Under the Digital Services Act

In an announcement made by the European Commission, it was announced that OpenAI's developed ChatGPT model, as well as Reddit and Roblox platforms, have been granted a new status. In this context, the respective services will face a higher standard of oversight and accountability.

New Obligations and Restrictions Imposed on Platforms

The newly enacted rules restrict platforms from serving targeted advertisements to minor users. Furthermore, the use of users' sensitive data such as sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, or political views for targeting purposes is prevented.

User Count Criterion and Grace Period for Compliance

Platforms and search engines in the European Union that reach a threshold of 45 million average monthly users are considered very large. ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox platforms have until the end of December 2026 to comply with all these new rules.
