Vijay Pande, who managed a multi-billion-dollar healthcare and life sciences portfolio at a16z, has founded VZVC, a new firm making focused investments while leveraging artificial intelligence in its operations.

The Transition from a16z to VZVC

With the support of Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, Vijay Pande established and managed the healthcare and life sciences practice at a16z, growing the fund he oversaw to approximately $4 billion. He stepped down from this role in June of last year to launch VZVC, a smaller-scale investment firm, alongside Zach Werner.

AI-Powered Operations

The newly established VZVC firm chooses to make only about five focused investments a year instead of thirty. Having no partner positions within its ranks, the venture relies heavily on artificial intelligence to carry out its daily operations.

Data Challenges in Biology

Sharing his insights on AI-driven biotechnology, Pande noted that, unlike text data, biological data cannot be easily scraped from the internet. This situation forces companies to build their own proprietary datasets.

Clinical Trials and Drug Development

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are transforming biology from a discovery-driven science into an engineerable discipline. Clinical trials, which are costly due to the low predictive accuracy of animal models, are optimized through this approach.
