Minister Murat Kurum Announces Turkey's COP31 Climate Vision

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum announced in his speech at the NextGenCOP30.5 Climate Summit that Turkey's COP31 vision will be based on the principles of dialogue, consensus, and action.

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum made important statements at the opening of the NextGenCOP30.5 Climate Summit and Youth Diplomacy Simulation Program held on Democracy and Freedoms Island.

Principles of the COP31 Vision

Minister Kurum stated that they have built the approach of the COP31 presidency, which they will host in Antalya, on three main principles: dialogue, consensus, and action.

Stating that Turkey will carry out the presidency and action agenda, Kurum explained that Australia will assume a special responsibility in the negotiation process.

2053 Targets and Climate Law

Touching upon the 2053 Net Zero Emission and Green Development target, Kurum reported that they aim to achieve a reduction of 466 million tons in greenhouse gas emissions by 2053 with the Second Nationally Determined Contribution.

He also stated that they enacted Turkey's first climate law in 2025 and published the emission trading system regulation.

Zero Waste and Recycling Efforts

He conveyed that within the scope of the Zero Waste Movement, the recovery rate, which was 13 percent in 2017, has reached 37 percent, and they aim to increase this rate to 60 percent by 2035.

He noted that with the Deposit Return System, 130 million beverage packages were recycled by the end of August.
