Opening the meetings in Asheville, Bessent stated that their main focus points are to grow the global economy and bring the increasing debt burden under control.
New Sanction Plans Against Iran
In an interview on Sunday, Bessent announced that within the scope of a strategy they named the 'Operation Economic Outcast', they plan to increase pressure on Iran by adding a new bank to the sanctions list.
The administration had previously taken steps to limit the United Arab Emirates operations of an Egypt-based bank. He stated that they are ready to apply financial severity if necessary.
Stance of the European Union and Other Countries
Bessent reported that the European Union met the sanction efforts with strong support. The European Union announced that it welcomes the economic pressure on Iran and will work with partners.
French Finance Minister Roland Lescure stated that they hope a joint roadmap for global economic growth will emerge from the G20 summit. Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov met with Bessent on the sidelines of the summit.
International Trade Tensions
Experts pointed out that the US may struggle to gather its traditional friends and allies on a common line due to recent trade disputes and a lack of prior consultations.
During the talks, potential sanctions against China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil, were also discussed, and it was emphasized that all options are on the table.
