Reasons for the Moratorium
County commissioners approved the one-year pause to develop stricter zoning and land use regulations for high-density technology projects.
New Facility Definition and Criteria
Under the new definition, facilities requiring 50 megawatts or more of electricity at peak demand are classified as large-scale. To prevent circumvention of regulations, the county will evaluate power usage across entire property sites rather than parcel by parcel.
Environmental Impacts and Security
The zoning regulation will address the placement of facilities, their proximity to residential areas and schools, and environmental impacts such as noise. Commissioners also raised national security concerns regarding anonymous developers.
Future Plans and Next Steps
A task force will be established to help shape future regulations, with a second hearing and potential formal adoption scheduled for September 24.
