Greece to provide two-month rent support to teachers and healthcare workers
In Greece, a refund equivalent to two months of annual rent will be provided to alleviate the housing expenses of teachers and healthcare workers.
The details of the regulation implemented in Greece to support the housing costs of teachers and healthcare workers have been finalized with a decision published in the Official Gazette, and those meeting the conditions will receive a refund equal to two months of their annual rent.
Scope and Amount of Rent Support
A joint ministerial decision prepared to alleviate the housing costs of teachers and healthcare workers in Greece has been published in the Official Gazette, and it was decided to grant rent refunds to eligible beneficiaries who meet the conditions.
The rent support to be provided under the application will be calculated based on the annual rent actually paid by the beneficiary in the previous year and will be applied as 2/12th of the annual rent, which corresponds to a two-month rent amount.
Payment Amount and Child Allowance
This financial support to be provided by the state can reach up to 1,600 euros in total, and an additional support of 100 euros for each child can be added on top of this determined upper limit.
Beneficiaries will gain the right to receive two separate payments during the first year of the application because rents belonging to two different periods will be paid within the year 2026.
Payment Schedule and Dates
While it was stated that the first payment will be made on September 25, a schedule was determined for 2024 rents to be paid by September 25, 2026 at the latest, and for 2025 rents by the end of November 2026 at the latest.
In subsequent periods, this housing support is planned to be deposited into the accounts of the beneficiaries in a single installment by the end of November each year.
Personnel Eligible for Support
Permanent and temporary teachers, as well as Special Education Personnel and Special Assistant Personnel, will be able to benefit from this new regulation.
Additionally, doctors, dentists, nurses, ambulance personnel, and other relevant healthcare workers will also be able to benefit from this support provided they meet the specified conditions.
Geographical Scope and Exceptions
The prepared rent assistance regulation was designed to generally cover public personnel working outside the Attica Region.
However, employees working in the Regional Unit of Islands and the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Regional Unit were excluded and designated as exceptions to this application.
