In a small study involving 15 patients, it was observed that participants receiving the highest dose experienced a 50% drop in cholesterol levels, which remained at that level for a full year.

In a small study tracking just 15 patients, participants who received the highest dose saw their cholesterol levels drop by half and remain that way for a full year. The results were presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress and published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Challenges of Traditional Methods
Despite a growing number of pills, injections, and lifestyle interventions to reduce the risk of heart disease, heart disease remains the number one cause of death worldwide. About half of the people who start taking statins, daily cholesterol pills, stop taking the medication.
Many individuals who could benefit from the drugs also never start using them. Factors such as a lack of access to healthcare, intolerance to the medications, and the anxiety of lifelong drug use play a role in this situation.
Research Methodology and the ANGPTL3 Gene
In the new study funded by CRISPR Therapeutics, 15 patients received a single infusion of lipid nanoparticles carrying a gene editing mechanism to their livers. This method was programmed to cut and deactivate a gene called ANGPTL3, which plays a role in cholesterol metabolism.
The experiment was inspired by the discovery of individuals with naturally dysfunctional ANGPTL3 genes. It is known that these individuals have very low cholesterol and triglyceride levels and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
Future Plans and Expert Opinions
Samarth Kulkarni, CEO of CRISPR Therapeutics, stated that the results of the next phase of the trial, involving several dozen patients, are expected by the end of the year. Discussions will then begin with regulators regarding a large Phase 3 trial to test safety and efficacy.
Experts emphasize that the data looks promising in terms of stability, but the technology is at an early stage. In accordance with regulatory requirements, patients need to be monitored for 15 years, and it is estimated that this method could become an option for patients in the early 2030s.
