Smart Patch Technology Developed to Detect Environmental Risks
In an international project supported by TÜBİTAK, a next-generation wearable sensor system has been designed that detects harmful gases and heavy metals and alerts users through vibration.
In a TÜBİTAK-supported study jointly conducted by universities in the USA and Turkey, a wearable smart patch technology was introduced that detects environmental hazards in real-time and warns users by vibrating on the skin.
Joint Work by International Universities
Led by NC State University and carried out in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Delaware, and Rice University, significant progress has been made in wearable safety technology within the scope of the research.
The study, which also featured Prof. Dr. Bünyamin Şahin, a faculty member at Necmettin Erbakan University's Faculty of Engineering, as a researcher, was announced to the scientific community.
Technical Features and Working System of the Smart Patch
Developed under the project titled 'Multimodal Wearable Sensors with Haptic Communication Capabilities for Human and Robot Applications,' the system can instantly detect environmental threats such as harmful gases and heavy metals.
Capable of sensing six different environmental phenomena and alerting the user through six distinct vibration modes, this patch can be easily applied to various parts of the body.
Robot Applications and Areas of Use
During the studies, positive results were also obtained from the system's applications on robots, showing that robots could make decisions and exhibit behaviors similar to humans.
It was stated that the device could be utilized in critical military operations, search and rescue efforts following natural disasters, environmental monitoring activities, and the mining sector.
