Safe Swept Away and Looting Incidents in Nepal Flood Disaster

During the devastating floods that hit Nepal, 29 people were detained for allegedly opening a bank safe that was swept away by currents for kilometers and sharing the money inside. As disaster data in the country is updated, the death toll continues to rise.

Safe Swept Away in Flood Waters and Detentions

A bank safe swept away by the waters of the Bhotekoshi in the Rasuwa district was found near the Trishuli River in Dhading. Police teams took action upon reports that local residents had broken open the safe and taken the cash inside.

As a result of the operations, 29 suspects were detained, and a total of 92 million 68 thousand 505 Nepalese rupees was seized during searches conducted on the suspects and in their homes.

Suspect Profiles and Investigation

It was reported that the detained individuals ranged in age from 19 to 49 and the majority consisted of residents of Mastar in the Galchhi-4 area.

Police teams have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact source of the seized money and to identify other suspects who may be connected to the incident.

Arrest for Theft from a Corpse

A video showing gold earrings being stolen from the corpse of a flood victim swept away by the current of the Narayani River sparked widespread outrage on social media.

Security forces, taking action after the footage circulated, arrested two individuals determined to be connected to the incident and initiated legal proceedings.

Updated Disaster Balance Sheet and Losses

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority of Nepal announced that the number of people who lost their lives in the devastating flood disaster has risen to 626.

Authorities stated that while search and rescue efforts continue, the number of missing persons has reached 2,426, while the number of missing foreign nationals remains at 517.
