According to a report prepared by the McKinsey Global Institute, artificial intelligence and automation technologies could lead approximately 11 million people in the U.S. to change professions by 2035. While millions of new job opportunities are expected to arise with this technological transformation, the demand for workers in certain sectors will decrease significantly.

Major Contraction in Office and Administrative Jobs

Office and administrative support jobs are among the areas where the impact of artificial intelligence and automation will be felt most intensely. In this sector, which employs approximately 18 million people in the U.S., it is projected that 81 percent of working hours could be affected by automation. It is stated that the demand for workers in this field could decrease by 38 percent.

High Decline in Agriculture and Forestry

The impact of automation is also expected to be strong in agriculture, fishing, and forestry fields. It is estimated that labor demand in these sectors, where approximately 400,000 people work, could decline by 43 percent. This rate stands out as the highest decline expectation among the 10 occupational groups evaluated in the report.

Transformation Process in the Technology Sector

It is assessed that the need for workers may also decrease in areas that develop and utilize the technology sector. While 70 percent of working hours in technology and analytics fields are expected to be affected by automation, it is projected that labor demand in this group, which employs 5.2 million people, could drop by 22 percent.

Manufacturing and Retail Sectors

It is stated that 68 percent of working hours in the manufacturing and production sector, and 67 percent in the retail and sales field, could be affected by automation. The potential decline in worker demand is expected to be at the level of 25 percent in manufacturing and 27 percent in retail and sales.

Finance and Food Services

It is estimated that 62 percent of working hours in business and finance fields could be affected by technological transformation, and worker demand could decrease by 18 percent. While 60 percent of working hours in food services could fall under the scope of automation, a 31 percent drop in labor demand is projected.

Situation in the Media and Entertainment Sector

Professions in the arts, media, and entertainment sector are also becoming part of the transformation. It is calculated that 58 percent of working hours in this field, where approximately 1.9 million people work, could be affected by automation. The potential drop in worker demand is estimated to remain at the level of 13 percent.

Transportation, Legal, and Repair Fields

It is projected that 55 percent of working hours in transportation and logistics fields could be affected by automation, and labor demand could decrease by 30 percent. In the legal field, while 47 percent of working hours could be affected by automation, the potential drop in employment demand is calculated as 18 percent.

Comprehensive Training Need for Workers

Approximately 45 percent of workers who may be forced to change professions might have to undergo comprehensive training, relocate to another region, or turn to lower-paying jobs in order to find new employment. McKinsey Global Institute Director Tanguy Catlin emphasizes the importance of problem-solving and continuous learning skills.
