AI Evaluation Startup Vals Raises $40 Million in Funding
Vals, which secured $40 million in a Series A funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, aims to transform traditional AI benchmarking systems.
Founded in 2024, Vals—a startup that measures the success of AI models in complex real-world tasks—has raised $40 million in a Series A round led by Andreessen Horowitz.
Investment Round and Growth Figures
After securing a seed investment last year led by 8VC and Bloomberg Beta, the company reached $40 million in financing through the Series A round spearheaded by Andreessen Horowitz. The startup's revenue increased eightfold compared to last year, its headcount grew to 25, and further growth is planned.
Approach to Traditional Systems
It is noted that traditional and legacy benchmarking systems used by AI companies to validate their models fall short in measuring the capabilities of modern models. To address this gap, Vals offers a new evaluation process that goes beyond academic benchmarks.
Sectoral Focus and Test Materials
The company evaluates models on complex tasks in fields such as law, finance, and coding, as well as areas like cybersecurity and biosafety. By not using publicly available test materials, the startup enables companies to improve their models through exam-like tests.
New Program for Federal Agencies
Expanding its model evaluation services, Vals has also launched a specialized program tailored for federal agencies. With these moves, the startup aims to become the standard setter for AI benchmarking in the industry.
