California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order mandating independent audits for companies developing artificial intelligence technology and accelerating work on an emergency shutdown switch.

Executive Order Step from the California Governor's Office

According to a written statement from the California Governor's Office, Newsom took action following recent risky artificial intelligence incidents and signed a new executive order.

Governor Newsom envisions independent audits of companies developing artificial intelligence technology and the acceleration of efforts to create an emergency kill switch for the models they produce.

Experts to Prepare Guidelines Within Two Months

In accordance with the executive order, a group of experts will convene within two months to prepare comprehensive guidelines aimed at strengthening the state's laws regarding artificial intelligence safety.

Stating that the risks are too high to delay action, officials noted that comprehensive artificial intelligence auditing efforts will be accelerated before it is too late.

Criticism of the Federal Government by Governor Newsom

Gavin Newsom emphasized that while executives of artificial intelligence companies are begging for regulations to be introduced, the federal government's failure to establish a meaningful oversight mechanism is concerning.

Slowdown Proposal from Anthropic CEO

Dario Amodei, CEO of US-based artificial intelligence company Anthropic, had proposed slowing down artificial intelligence development to allow for oversight following the resignation of a researcher at the firm.

Amodei warned that the rapid development of the technology could make it difficult to understand and control systems, and argued that security standards must be established.

Approaches of Industry Leaders and Politicians

While Elon Musk supported the proposal by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that he agreed with the proposal and would take the same step regarding independent evaluation.

While US President Donald Trump claimed that a conspiracy is being waged against artificial intelligence, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that fanning fears would harm global governance.
