Global Inequality and Artificial Intelligence
Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence could either be a great equalizer or a force that widens the global inequality gap. The annual report published by the foundation emphasized that one billion people, mostly English speakers, benefit from current artificial intelligence systems, while seven billion people are largely left behind.
Distribution and Areas of Investment
Forty percent of the announced $1 billion fund will be allocated to education, 40 percent to health initiatives, 10 percent to agricultural projects, and the remaining 10 percent to digital initiatives such as expanding language data for artificial intelligence tools.
Language and Local Data Barriers
It was noted that while artificial intelligence speech recognition tools have low error rates in English, they have many times more errors in West African languages like Yoruba. The foundation aims to ensure the technology works in every language and is supported by local data.
Call to Slow Down Development
Bill Gates expressed his support for calls to slow down artificial intelligence growth to ensure that benefits outweigh harms and that communities have time to adapt.
