According to a leaked internal Microsoft spreadsheet, a single employee spent $28,000 on AI tools in just a 28-day period. This situation triggered a new auditing process aimed at bringing artificial intelligence costs under control across the company.
Record AI Spending
A leaked internal employee compensation spreadsheet revealed massive spending discrepancies within Microsoft. An employee working in the Customer and Partner Solutions organization set a major record by spending $28,000 on AI tools in just 28 days.
Far Above Company Average
In the report, to which approximately 350 employees provided data, it was determined that the median company-wide spending for the 28-day period was around $300. Alongside the record-breaking employee, some other personnel were also found to have exceeded the $10,000 threshold, while certain individuals in the same department spent amounts represented in only single or double digits.
Cost Warnings from Management
Following the excessive expenditures, Microsoft management took action to curb costs. In early August, Jay Parikh, vice president of the CoreAI division, sent a memo to employees urging them to reduce excessive AI usage.
New Era and Model Transition
Management aims to manage artificial intelligence expenditures with strict discipline, much like other critical resources. In this context, it was announced that an OpenAI model consuming fewer tokens will be adopted for internal use.
