Researchers recently found that spending just 10 minutes relying on an AI tool significantly impairs the user's ability to focus and persist with difficult tasks. A preliminary draft made waves earlier this year, and the team presented the updated, peer-reviewed paper this week at the Conference on Language Modeling.

It has been revealed that using an AI tool for just 10 minutes significantly weakens people's ability to focus on and persist through challenging tasks.

Background of the Research

A new study conducted in partnership with UC Berkeley researchers has raised important questions about interactions with artificial intelligence in daily life and education. Brian Christian, a member of the research team, continues his work within the Center for Human-Compatible AI.

Details of the Experiments

Researchers designed randomized controlled experiments to test how quickly the ability to focus and persist diminishes. A total of 1,222 participants took part in multiple experiments involving fraction problems and SAT reading comprehension texts.

Results and Cognitive Effects

When the AI tool was removed, participants who had previously used it were found to struggle significantly. These individuals gave up more easily or exhibited lower accuracy rates compared to those who worked without assistance throughout the process.
