Restoration Works at the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque Inspected
Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy visited the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque to inspect on-site the restoration and underground tunnel works carried out in four phases.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy inspected the ongoing comprehensive restoration works at the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, entrusted by Fatih Sultan Mehmet, on-site and made detailed statements regarding the latest status of the project.
Restoration Works and Phases
Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy visited the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, which has entered the most comprehensive restoration process in history, and received information from officials. He stated that the project is being carried out in four phases, three of which have been completed.
Tomb and Exterior Repairs
Within the scope of the first phase, renovation works were carried out on the tombs in the south facade garden. While the dome lead coverings were renewed, conservation was performed on the wooden covers and shutters, and detailed cleaning procedures were carried out on the exteriors.
Minaret Reinforcement and Dismantling Operations
Within the framework of the ongoing second phase, static reinforcement works were carried out on the northeast minaret. In line with the analyses performed, the minaret was dismantled in a controlled manner up to a certain level and reinforced.
Dome and Mosaic Protection Measures
It was announced that reinforcement works on the main dome and half domes will be carried out from the outer surface due to the mosaic coating. Temporary protection measures were taken to prevent the structure from being damaged during the removal of the lead coatings.
Gallery Floor and Visitor Arrangements
Within the scope of the completed third phase works, the gallery floor was made ready for visitors. Entry and exit ramps, ticket offices, and security systems were installed, and the visitor route was reorganized.
Underground Tunnels and Excavation Works
Cleaning and maintenance works for the underground structures of Hagia Sophia are also ongoing. Significant progress has been made in the excavation and documentation activities carried out in the tunnels and hypogea in the Vezir Garden and West Garden regions.
