Canada Announces $20 Billion Tariff Retaliation Against US

The Canadian government has decided to impose additional duties on US-origin products worth approximately $20 billion in retaliation against tariffs applied by the US. Announced by Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, the decision includes imposing additional tariffs of up to 50% on more than 700 products starting September 8.
Comprehensive Tariff List and Affected Sectors
The new customs duties to be implemented by Canada will directly affect numerous sectors importing from the US. Covering more than 700 products valued at approximately $20 billion, the list includes critical sectors such as steel, dairy products, home appliances, agricultural machinery, wood pulp, electronic products, furniture, and apparel.
This move serves as a direct response to US President Donald Trump administration's decision to increase tariffs on Canadian products.
Economic Sovereignty and Support Packages
Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne emphasized that protecting the country's economic sovereignty is in no way negotiable. The government has launched a new $5.4 billion support package for local workers and businesses negatively impacted by the trade dispute.
With this new package, the total amount of financial support provided since 2025 to mitigate the negative impacts of US tariffs on the Canadian economy has exceeded $21.7 billion.
