Giuseppe Garibaldi Aircraft Carrier Joins the Indonesian Navy

The Giuseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier, donated to Indonesia by Italy, is scheduled to arrive in the country between September 15 and 20 and be commissioned on September 25 under the name KRI Gajah Mada.

The Delivery Process of the Aircraft Carrier

Departing from Italy and proceeding via the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, the Giuseppe Garibaldi is expected to arrive in Indonesia between September 15 and 20. Italian frigates are escorting the ship during transit as part of the transfer process.

Handover and New Base

The Indonesian Ministry of Defense announced that an official handover ceremony will be held in Jakarta upon the ship's arrival. Once the procedures are completed, the ship will depart for its new base in Lampung.

Entry into Service and Name Change

The ship, which currently bears the name ITS Garibaldi, will hoist the country's flag upon reaching Indonesia and be renamed KRI Gajah Mada. President Prabowo Subianto is planned to attend the commissioning ceremony.

History and Technical Specifications of the Ship

Commissioned in 1985 and decommissioned from active duty in 2024, the Giuseppe Garibaldi is approximately 180 meters long with a full load displacement of 14,000 tons. The ship has also taken part in NATO missions in the past.

Defense Relations with Turkey and Italy

While it is stated that Indonesia ordered two İSTİF-class frigates from Turkey in 2025, it is also noted that work is underway on various defense export projects with the Rome administration.
