Mersin Shipyard is Developing and Will Build New Ships for the Navy

Mersin Shipyard Command, which ensures the continuity of Turkey's naval power in the Eastern Mediterranean, continues its preparations for new shipbuilding activities after being upgraded to the status of a military shipyard.

History and Military Shipyard Status

Established in 1969 as a repair support command, the facility was elevated to the status of a military shipyard on August 16, 2024.

With this status change, the facility became the country's fifth military shipyard, following the Istanbul, Gölcük, İzmir, and Aksaz Shipyards.

Infrastructure and Maintenance-Repair Activities

Mersin Shipyard Command continues its activities uninterruptedly with its 4,500-ton capacity dock and 23 workshops.

Maintenance, repair, and modernization processes of many naval elements, from warships to submarines, are successfully carried out at the facility.

New Construction and Expansion Plans

Mersin Shipyard Commander Naval Captain Volkan Kamışoğlu announced that the facility will prepare for the construction of larger ships in the upcoming period.

Within the scope of the expansion process, it is planned to produce other batches of tugboats at this facility that were manufactured at the İzmir Shipyard Command.

International and Civil Services

In addition to the Turkish Navy, maintenance services are also provided to foreign military ships and civilian marine vessels within the scope of revolving funds.

In the past period, repair work for a patrol frigate belonging to the Bangladesh Navy was completed at this facility.

Strategic Importance for the Eastern Mediterranean

Security Analyst Dr. Eray Güçlüer stated that the shipyard keeps the combat capability of the naval power in the Eastern Mediterranean at the highest level.

The strategic role of the facility in providing uninterrupted maintenance, repair, and logistical support to the Turkish Navy was strongly emphasized.
