Turkey Prepares National Just Transition Strategy in Energy Sector
A new planning process is being carried out to minimize potential negative effects during the transition to a low-carbon system.
Turkey is preparing a National Just Transition Strategy in the energy sector to mitigate the impacts of the transition to a low-carbon system on workers and local economies.
Main Objective and Scope of the Strategy
With the prepared National Just Transition Strategy, it is aimed to prevent job losses, especially in regions where coal mining and coal-fired electricity generation are intensive.
In this context, it is planned to guide workers toward new professions and to support regional economies in a multifaceted manner.
Inter-Institutional Coordination and Studies
Carried out under the coordination of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the strategy preparations are being conducted across a total of 17 sectors and 33 themes.
A common consensus is being sought in the efforts carried out with the participation of public institutions, labor unions, professional organizations, and non-governmental organizations.
Local Economies and Social Supports
The just transition approach envisions that the burden of the energy transition will not be left solely on specific workers or regions.
The reduction of operations in a coal mine or thermal power plant can also affect the transportation, trade, and service sectors.
It is planned to provide workers with new skills and to offer social support to groups that may be more affected by the transformation.
