Payment Technologies Move from the UK

The UK Treasury plans to give the Bank of England a new secondary objective to support payment technologies and digital asset innovation.

The proposed objective requires regulations to keep pace with technological changes and obliges the central bank to report annually to parliament.

Regulation and Evaluations

City Minister Lucy Rigby stated that financial stability will remain the primary objective, but this new secondary objective will trigger innovation in payment systems and digital finance.

Bank of England Deputy Governor for Financial Stability Sarah Breeden also expressed her support for the legal objective to be included in the financial services bill to be debated in the House of Lords in September.
