The Purpose of the New AI Rule
The new rule proposed by the Florida Department of Education aims to have all institutions in the state system adopt policies defining the use and limitations of artificial intelligence tools. This regulation targets providing students with a quality education, increasing operational efficiency, and ensuring a safe learning environment for the entire campus community.
Scope and Approval Process
Approved on Monday by Chancellor of Education Henry Mack, the new rule covers all artificial intelligence-based software applications and services. The State Board of Education will address the matter at its next meeting on September sixteenth at Polk State College in Winter Haven.
K-12 and Ongoing Legal Proceedings
The Department of Education is also instructing K-12 school districts to incorporate artificial intelligence rules into their internet safety guidelines. Within this framework, notifying parents and providing an opt-out option is mandated for approved AI tools, while tools for pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade levels are subject to additional review. Meanwhile, Florida is a party to a civil lawsuit filed against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman over ChatGPT.
