Major AI Infrastructure Project in Ohio by OpenAI, NVIDIA, and SB Energy
OpenAI has secured approximately 8 gigawatts of IT capacity to support advanced AI infrastructure at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Ohio.
OpenAI, in collaboration with SB Energy, NVIDIA, and the U.S. Department of Energy, has signed an agreement to secure approximately 8 gigawatts of IT capacity at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus located in Pike County, Ohio.
Project Scope and Employment Goals
The work carried out under the agreement is projected to create 35,000 construction jobs over a six-year construction period running through 2032. Additionally, the project is planned to provide 2,500 long-term operational jobs once completed.
Investments and Community Support
In addition to a previously announced $40 million commitment, OpenAI will invest an additional $40 million into a community grant fund. Furthermore, the company will provide $84 million in Codex credits via ChatGPT to university students in Ohio.
Infrastructure and Eco-Friendly Systems
SB Energy will cover the full cost of grid upgrades and new transmission lines to serve the data center, ensuring that costs are not passed on to electricity ratepayers in Ohio. The project will utilize closed-loop, air-cooled systems to reduce water demand.
NVIDIA Investment and Timeline
NVIDIA will invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy and provide credit support for the initial phase of infrastructure. The first 800 megawatts of capacity in the project is expected to become operational in 2028.
