Northside School District Partners with OpenAI to Bring ChatGPT to Teachers
As part of a program joined by numerous school districts in Texas, the artificial intelligence tool will be used to help teachers streamline daily tasks such as lesson planning, grading, and drafting emails.
Northside Independent School District (NISD), San Antonio's largest school district, has announced a partnership with OpenAI to implement "ChatGPT for Teachers" in an effort to boost teacher efficiency and save time.
The Era of Artificial Intelligence in Education
OpenAI is expanding its "ChatGPT for Teachers" program to 55 new K-12 school systems nationwide, bringing the total to more than 100 school systems. In Texas, districts implementing or in the process of implementing this technology alongside NISD include the independent school districts of Houston, Fort Worth, Dallas, Frisco, Killeen, Abilene, and Humble.
As San Antonio's largest school district, NISD serves approximately 97,600 students across 133 schools and employs 13,000 staff members. Thanks to the new partnership, system-wide access for all personnel will launch in October.
Data Security and Teacher Support
Leah Belsky, OpenAI's Vice President of Education, stated that the tool is not designed for students and provides school districts with dedicated administrative visibility and privacy protections. Unlike standard ChatGPT accounts, data collected in this system will not be used to train other artificial intelligence models.
Leann Kidd, Director of Technology Services at NISD, stated that teachers can use the tool as a "thought partner" to prepare lesson plans, conduct quick grading, and draft emails.
Current Usage and Future Plans
More than half of NISD personnel have utilized artificial intelligence since ChatGPT's initial debut in 2022, either through individual accounts or other tools such as Google Gemini Notebook and MagicSchool AI. With the new partnership, the district is focusing on staff training regarding ethical guidelines, privacy, and proper prompt engineering.
The "ChatGPT for Teachers" application will be provided free of charge to schools until June 2028, during which OpenAI will continue to research the technology's impact on education. Direct student access to artificial intelligence tools remains very limited and is subject to teacher approval.
