Difficulty in accessing human gurus, high costs, and disappointments experienced with human guides are driving spiritually seeking individuals toward AI chatbots. Trained on sacred texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, AI models offer users spiritual support without time and budget constraints.
The Shift from Gurus to Digital Chatbots
Kripa Vaidyanathan and her family, living in Chennai, India, sought support from a guru after losing their 27-year-old nephew in a traffic accident in Alaska in 2024. However, finding the guru's karma-focused response inadequate and hurtful, the family turned to AI chatbots, which offer non-judgmental and easy accessibility.
While gurus are traditionally considered essential for liberation in traditions like Hinduism, large language models allow users to explore existential questions at any time without financial or calendar obstacles.
Steps by Celebrities and Developers into AI
Spiritual leaders are also joining this technological transformation. Jaggi Vasudev (Sadhguru) launched the Miracle of the Mind app featuring an interactive AI feature, while Deepak Chopra created the "Digital Deepak" platform.
Meanwhile, developer Vikas Sahu launched the GitaGPT platform, which includes AI avatars of Lord Krishna to offer spiritual companionship and advice.
Expert Criticisms and Limitations
Experts such as Liz Bucar from Northeastern University and Noreen Herzfeld from St. John's School argue that AI cannot replace human presence, lived experiences, and ethical responsibility.
Experts point out that rather than acting as a challenging teacher that triggers genuine spiritual growth, AI generally behaves as an agreeable supporter. Organizations like Proto Hologram and the Self-Realization Fellowship also emphasize that while integrating technology, the place of the human spirit cannot be filled.
