This new funding serves as an extension of the $400 million Series B investment that the company announced in June, which closed at a $2 billion valuation.
Founding and Background
The company was founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, alongside former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry.
The startup received early-stage support from names such as 8VC, Radical Ventures, Nvidia, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, and AI researcher Fei-Fei Li.
Technological Developments and Model
Generalist is developing an AI foundation model capable of working with various robots and states that, thanks to its newly announced Gen 1.5 model, robots can learn new tasks from 3- to 12-second video demonstrations.
The startup is working with a handful of customers to gather feedback in order to tailor the model to specific use cases.
Market Position and Competition
Not the only company developing general-purpose robot brains in the industry, Generalist's competitors include Physical Intelligence, valued at $11 billion, and Skild AI, valued at $14 billion.
