The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education: Experts Evaluate Advantages and Risks
Research and expert opinions examining the role of artificial intelligence in education reveal that the technology should be used as a supportive learning tool; otherwise, deep learning and individual success could be harmed.
While the use of artificial intelligence in educational processes is spreading rapidly, experts warn that alongside the conveniences this technology offers, it also brings risks such as over-reliance and cheating.
Use of Artificial Intelligence Among Youth
A study conducted by the Pew Research Center shows that 64 percent of teenagers use artificial intelligence chatbots. More than half of these youth turn to these tools to acquire information and assist with school assignments, while 59 percent state that incidents of cheating using artificial intelligence regularly occur at their schools.
Similarly, researchers at the USC Center for Generative AI and Society have voiced concerns, pointing out that many college students turn to artificial intelligence to get quick answers rather than engaging in deep learning.
Proper Tool Usage in the Learning Process
Kendall Hartley, a UNLV educational technology professor, states that artificial intelligence does not necessarily change the way humans learn, but rather transforms the existing tools used to complete educational tasks. According to Hartley, students first need to understand the purpose for which they are using this technology.
Stating that artificial intelligence can be useful for critiquing writing, making suggestions, and simplifying the understanding of difficult concepts, Hartley recommends that students begin their work with their own words and ideas, and use artificial intelligence solely as a supportive tool.
Risk of Dependency and Exam Success
Experts emphasize that the biggest concern is students becoming overly dependent on artificial intelligence to think for them. Although higher grades are achieved on AI-assisted assignments, some research shows this success does not always persist when students are tested independently.
Educators state that as artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent in classrooms and on campuses, students must learn how to benefit from this technology while continuing to develop their critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills.
