A new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center shed light on the perception of artificial intelligence in American society. The research shows that a significant portion of adults living in the country do not hold control over their healthcare processes.
While the proportion of those who feel ineffective in the decision-making process was measured at 53 percent, 63 percent of participants demand more say on this matter. Thousands of adults were surveyed for the study in June.
Demographic Distribution and Awareness
According to the obtained data, 60 percent of white adults state they have insufficient say in this field. This rate was recorded at lower percentages among Hispanic, Black, and Asian participants.
Additionally, approximately 46 percent of participants state they are unsure whether artificial intelligence technology is being used in their healthcare processes. There are distinct differences in the level of knowledge regarding the role of the technology.
Demand for Information from Healthcare Providers
It is of great importance to the majority of participants that service-providing institutions inform them about the use of technology. Individuals want to be informed, especially in situations affecting medical decisions.
Patients demand clear information at critical stages such as screening analyses, diagnostic processes, and the explanation of laboratory results. These rates range between 56 and 81 percent depending on the field.
Debates in the Medical World
The results of the research came following articles published in medical journals suggesting that artificial intelligence systems could outperform physicians in cognitive tasks. This situation caused widespread repercussions in the medical world.
Leading organizations such as the American Medical Association and the Digital Medicine Society joined the debates by publishing a new framework defining the role of physicians in the age of artificial intelligence.
