Minutes before the constitutional deadline expired and an early election would have been triggered, the Kosovo Parliament elected economist and academic Justina Shiroka Pula as the new president in a marathon session.

In the extraordinary session held in the 120-seat parliament, Justina Shiroka Pula was elected as the new president by receiving 81 votes.

The Hague Court Law

Immediately before the presidential election, lawmakers approved a controversial law limiting the powers of the Hague-based special court.

This critical election eliminated the legislative crisis that had lasted for more than 19 months in the Balkan country, as well as the possibility of a snap election.
