By presidential decree in Pakistan, a state of emergency has been declared in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, governed by the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, and the local government has been suspended with the administration of the province handed over to a governor.

Decision of Emergency and Its Grounds

The president of Pakistan declared a state of emergency upon the advice of the prime minister through a cabinet decision. The federal government cited the failure to combat Islamist militancy in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province along the Afghan border as the primary reason behind the decision.

Transfer of Provincial Administration and Troop Deployment

In line with the decision taken based on constitutional powers, a governor was appointed to office in the province, and it was announced that troops would be dispatched to the region. Minister of Law Azam Nazeer Tarar stated that the governor would initially serve for six months, but the term could be extended if necessary.

Planned Protest and Wave of Detentions

Tension escalated ahead of the protest march planned by supporters of Imran Khan's party, PTI, to the capital Islamabad. While march preparations continued, hundreds of party activists and Khan's three sisters were detained by security forces.

Political Debates and Reactions

Imran Khan's party, PTI, described the state of emergency decision as a coup disguised as an emergency. Political actors and JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who acts as a mediator, also stated that the move was an attack on democracy.
