At the Health Innovation: Media Dialogue 2026 event held by Roche in Basel, it was emphasized that cutting healthcare budgets is economically incorrect, and the costs of chronic diseases on the workforce were addressed.

Health Policies and Aging Population

At the Health Innovation: Media Dialogue 2026 meeting organized by Roche in Basel, the transformation of healthcare systems was evaluated along the axes of economy, innovation, and artificial intelligence.

Attended by members of the press from six countries, the event drew attention to the fact that with the aging population, health policies are not merely an issue for ministries alone.

Global Cost of Chronic Diseases

While increasing life expectancy makes the transition to preventive and early diagnosis-based models mandatory, failing to treat chronic conditions leads to major economic losses.

It was stated that over the next decade, the cost of chronic and non-communicable diseases will reach trillions of dollars, causing workforce loss and early retirement.

Economic Return on Healthcare Investments

It was conveyed that healthcare budgets should not be viewed as a cost item, but rather should be treated as an accelerator for the national economy and security.

According to WifOR research, it was stated that investments made in areas such as breast cancer and eye health return manifold value to the economy.

R&D Activities and New Technologies

It was noted that Roche allocates billions of Swiss francs to R&D activities every year and that new drug development processes take many years.

It was conveyed that a large portion of drugs in the clinical development stage focus on non-communicable diseases and that technology offers significant opportunities.

Disease Is Recession, Health Is Growth

WifOR Institute CEO Prof. Dr. Dennis A. Ostwald stated that sustainable growth is impossible without a healthy workforce.

It was emphasized that governments should evaluate health status as a fundamental part of economic policies.
