Diabetes and obesity create an economic burden due to direct treatment expenses as well as workforce loss, early retirement, and decreased productivity.

The prevalence of these diseases increases the need for resources in healthcare systems, highlighting the importance of preventive health services with each passing day.

Milan Congress and Statements

The 62nd Congress of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes gathered in Milan this year to address current scientific developments in obesity and diabetes treatment.

Novo Turkey General Manager Bike Başaklar stated that they reach millions of people worldwide and that the company allocates 13 percent of its revenue to R&D every year.

Clinical Trials in Turkey

Novo Turkey Medical Director Dr. Ömer Buğra Bahadır stated that 9.6 million adults live with diabetes in Turkey and that the country ranks first in obesity.

Bahadır noted that approximately 1.2 billion TL has been invested in clinical trials over the last three years and that Turkey will participate in a new global program in 2027.

Scope and Cost of the Disease

Endocrinology and Metabolism Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Alper Sönmez stated that diabetes is not just a condition related to blood sugar, but a syndrome.

Sönmez explained that the total amount spent on diabetes, including dialysis, heart attacks, and hospital admissions, reaches approximately 20 percent of the health budget.
