Improper air conditioner use triggers respiratory illnesses
Experts state that improper air conditioner use can lead to illnesses such as cough and pneumonia.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yasemin Saygıdeğer from Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine Balcalı Hospital issued warnings, stating that improper air conditioner use can lay the groundwork for ailments such as cough, wheezing, increased phlegm, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
The effect of hot weather on respiration
While high temperatures cause the body to work harder to maintain its heat balance, respiratory rate increases alongside heart rate. High humidity makes sweat evaporation difficult, preventing cooling.
Improper use of air conditioners
There is an increase in the number of patients coming to outpatient clinics with complaints of being 'struck by the AC'. Conditions such as cough, increased phlegm, bronchitis, and pneumonia generally stem from the incorrect use of air conditioners.
Misconceptions in air conditioner use
Air conditioner settings should not be drastically different from the outdoor environment, and they should not blow directly onto the face, chest, or back. Additionally, regular cleaning and maintenance of the filters are of great importance.
Warnings for chronic patients
Asthma and COPD patients need to be extremely cautious when using air conditioners. If air conditioner-related pneumonia is added to these patients, the clinical picture can worsen and the process can extend to intensive care.
