According to a scientific study, simple 12-week lifestyle interventions such as nutrition, probiotic consumption, and regular physical activity can significantly slow down the rate of biological aging based on DNA methylation indicators.

Chronological and Biological Age Difference

Although date of birth determines calendar age, the body's actual biological age can vary from person to person. Individuals of the same age can have very different metabolic health, muscle strength, and physical capacities.

In recent years, the scientific world has focused on the concept of biological aging rather than chronological age. Modifiable factors such as diet, sleep, stress, and metabolic health play a critical role in understanding this process.

Scope and Methodology of the Study

Published in the journal Aging in 2026, a randomized controlled study examined the effects of lifestyle changes on DNA methylation-based aging markers.

The study involved 48 overweight men aged between 50 and 74, who were randomly divided into two groups.

Steps Implemented in the Intervention Group

Participants in the intervention group were provided with yogurt containing a specific probiotic bacterial strain and received personalized nutritional counseling.

Those in this group were asked to reduce overeating, frequent snacking, and sugary beverages, and to perform walking or stepper exercises at least three days a week.

Change in the DunedinPACE Value

Important findings were obtained as a result of comparing blood samples taken at the beginning of the study and at the end of 12 weeks.

A significant decrease in the DunedinPACE value, one of the DNA methylation indicators, was detected in the intervention group, which corresponds to a 2.2 percent slowdown in the rate of aging.

Experts' Lifestyle Recommendations

Nutrition and Diet Specialist Zehra Elban stated that the obtained result cannot be attributed to a single food, and that the entirety of sustainable habits is important for success.

It was stated that small but consistent lifestyle changes can make a big difference in body health in the long run.
