Precautions to Take Against Rabies Risk in Stray Animal Contacts
Experts recommend washing with soapy water as a first response to stray animal bites and scratches, and immediately starting the vaccination process.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Doğan from NKU Faculty of Medicine stated that in the event of exposure to scratches or bites from stray animals, washing the area thoroughly with plenty of water and soap and applying to a healthcare institution without wasting time is of vital importance.
Rabies Risk and Transmission Routes
In daily life, there is a risk of encountering rabies cases as a result of exposure to scratches or bites from animals living on the streets. The disease is primarily transmitted to humans through contact with cats and dogs on the street.
First Response and Cleaning Phase
When a potential risk occurs, the first and most important step is to wash the area where the lesion has formed by lathering it with plenty of soap and water for at least 10 minutes. This practice significantly reduces the risk of transmission.
Application to a Healthcare Institution and Vaccination
After cleaning the injured area, the nearest healthcare institution should be consulted without wasting time and without scratching the wound area, and the rabies vaccine prophylaxis process must be started immediately.
Warnings for Families and Pet Owners
Families need to educate their children about contact with stray animals. In addition, repeating the vaccinations of pets regularly every year constitutes a major protective measure.
