Age verification era on social media: Restrictions for under 15s introduced
With a regulation published in the Official Gazette, age restrictions and safety standards on social networks have been reorganized. The aim is to protect children in the digital environment through verification via e-Devlet.
The new regulation prepared by the Ministry of Family and Social Services imposes service restrictions for users under 15 on social media platforms, while mandating strict privacy and security protocols for young people aged 15-18.
Mandatory Age Verification
Within the scope of the regulation published in the Official Gazette, social network providers are prohibited from offering services to children under the age of 15. User age determination will be carried out via the e-Devlet system without sharing identity information.
New Security Standards for Youth
Accounts of users in the 15-18 age group will be kept private by default. In these accounts, follower information will be hidden, live broadcasting will be blocked, and technical measures restricting the taking of screenshots will be implemented.
Commercial and Behavioral Restrictions
While platforms are prohibited from using designs that increase behavioral addiction, strict limitations have been imposed on the use of children's personal data for profiling or commercial advertising activities.
Parental Control and Transition Period
Parents will have full control over account settings, paid transactions, screen time, and location sharing. Existing account holders are required to complete age verification by March 31, 2027.
