Greece prepares social media restrictions for children under 15
A bill prepared in Greece to protect children aims to restrict social media access for those under 15 and block access to existing accounts.
The Greek government has prepared a new bill to restrict social media platform access for individuals under 15 in order to protect minors from digital risks. The measure is planned to enter into force on January 1, 2027.
Joint Press Conference Held
Greek Minister of State Akis Skertsos, Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis, and Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiu held a joint press conference to inform the public about the bill prepared regarding the access of minors to social media networks.
Company Measures Found Insufficient
Minister of State Skertsos clearly emphasized that the regulations implemented so far by social media companies to protect children are no longer sufficient and stated that new steps will be taken.
Children's Usage Rates Shared
Minister of Health Georgiadis stated that more than half of children between the ages of 10 and 12 have an active social media account, and one out of every four children with an account spends a very long time on these platforms.
To Be Aligned with European Union Laws
Minister of Digital Governance Papastergiu noted that the legal framework will be regulated in full compliance with European Union laws and that the application will officially come into effect as of January 1, 2027.
Access Block on Existing Accounts
Within the framework of the comprehensive bill prepared, it was reported that an access block will also be imposed on existing accounts opened by children under 15 before the measure takes effect.
