Announced at a Joint Press Conference
The Greek government has publicly announced the new bill prepared to restrict children's social media use. This comprehensive regulation was officially announced at a joint press conference held with the participation of relevant government ministers.
Statements and Rationale by Ministers
Speaking at the meeting, Minister of State Akis Skertsos emphasized that the steps taken by social media companies to protect children have fallen short. Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis stated that more than half of children in the 10-12 age group have their own accounts and that one in four children spends excessive time on these platforms.
European Union Legislation and Entry into Force Date
Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiu reported that the legal framework was designed in full compliance with European Union legislation. According to the planning, the new restrictions are targeted to be implemented on January 1, 2027.
Will Also Cover Existing Accounts
It was stated that the rules to be introduced will not be limited only to profiles to be opened in the future. The regulation will be applied in a way that includes all existing accounts opened by children who have not reached the age of 15 prior to the date the decision enters into force.
