New regulation for child users on social media platforms
Starting November 1, 2026, the regulation mandates age verification and parental control mechanisms to enhance children's safety in digital environments.
A new legal regulation prepared to protect children on social media platforms will come into effect on November 1, 2026. Within this scope, opening accounts for children under 15 is prohibited, while a series of restrictive measures such as age verification and parental control are being implemented for existing users.
Age limit and verification process
With the new regulation, children under the age of 15 are prohibited from opening social media accounts. For existing accounts, a mandatory age verification requirement is being introduced.
Platforms have until March 31, 2027, to verify the ages of their users. It is aimed that all accounts will be brought into compliance with the necessary criteria by this date.
Security and content restrictions
Accounts of children who have reached the age of 15 will operate in private mode by default. Additionally, these users will be prevented from live streaming and seeing personalized advertisements.
The infinite scroll feature, which is thought to increase addiction on platforms, is being banned, while children will only be allowed to receive messages from people they follow.
Parental control mechanisms
The regulation grants parents broader powers to monitor their children's digital activities. Parents will be able to limit the time their children spend on the platforms.
Furthermore, it aims to ensure financial security by requiring parental approval for paid transactions conducted by children through social media platforms.
