Voluminous Structures Unlike Traditional Knitting
While traditional knitting machines produce two-dimensional fabric surfaces, the new system creates voluminous structures by stacking loops layer upon layer.
Thanks to the machine's ability to form loops in forward, backward, and diagonal directions, three-dimensional structures with varying levels of thickness and stiffness in different regions can be produced.
Computer-Controlled 36-Needle Mechanism
At the center of the prototype are 36 knitting needles arranged in a 6x6 grid, with each needle utilizing an independently moving double-hooked mechanism.
While the knitting head carrying the yarn moves according to a computer program, researchers developed a specialized software library to control different types of loops.
Potential Applications in the Healthcare Sector
One of the prominent potential application areas of the technology stands out as the healthcare sector.
Researchers evaluate that in the future, three-dimensional scaffold structures supporting the development of artificial ligament or blood vessel tissues could be produced using this method.
Obstacles to Overcome for Commercial Use
The system is not yet ready for commercial use because the current prototype operates quite slowly and occasionally makes errors such as dropping stitches.
The research team believes that the technology can be scaled up with a larger needle bed and an improved control system.
