Artificial Intelligence Research: Large Majority of US Population Perceives Threat
A new public opinion poll revealed that a broad segment of participants thinks artificial intelligence technologies harbor risks for humanity in the future.
A comprehensive survey conducted by Quinnipiac University revealed that the majority of citizens in the United States harbor concerns that artificial intelligence could pose a threat to humanity.
Survey Participation and General Rates
In the survey conducted by Quinnipiac University, a total of 1,202 participants were asked in detail about their views and concerns regarding artificial intelligence.
Threat Perception and Level of Concern
According to the survey results, 38 percent of participants stated that they were very anxious about the potential threat of artificial intelligence to the existence of humanity. The proportion of those expressing slight concern was at the 35 percent level.
Share of Those Without Concern
In the study, the proportion of those who clearly stated that they felt no concern about this issue was recorded as 25 percent. Two percent of the participants refrained from expressing an opinion on the matter.
Expectation of Safety Standards
An overwhelming majority of the participants, namely 86 percent, reported supporting the requirement for companies to meet independent safety standards, even if it would slow down the development of artificial intelligence.
Executive Trust and Daily Life
Seventy-four percent of those surveyed stated that they have very little or no trust in the executives of artificial intelligence companies. Additionally, the percentage of those who think artificial intelligence will cause more harm than good in their daily lives was 53 percent.
