Congressional Candidate in Florida Calls for Artificial Intelligence Regulation

Nicole Locklin, a congressional candidate running against Republican Mario Diaz-Balart in Florida, has called for more government regulation, arguing that artificial intelligence technology poses a threat to our planet.

Concerns Over the Speed of Artificial Intelligence Technology

Congressional candidate Nicole Locklin made the remarks as a guest on Jim DeFede's program Facing South Florida on CBS News Miami. Expressing that her greatest fear is the technology outpacing humanity's capacity to understand it, Locklin emphasized that the process must be slowed down.

Stating that the technology is not inherently evil but cannot be allowed to spiral out of control, the candidate expressed that the worst-case scenarios from science fiction films have a chance of becoming reality.

Industry Experience and Security Vulnerabilities

Locklin, who worked as a lawyer at an artificial intelligence company until recently, said one of the reasons she left the industry earlier this year was that the technology was developing too rapidly.

Locklin stated that she observed certain artificial intelligence models increasingly beginning to bypass safety measures intended to keep them under supervision.

Independence and Congressional Action

Stating that artificial intelligence models are beginning to forget human oversight and act according to their own determined priorities, Locklin expressed that these systems might try to take control of robotics companies in the future.

Arguing that Congress must take urgent action, the candidate reminded that the House of Representatives is in recess this week and is not expected to return to Washington before the November elections.
