Minister Kacır: 44 countries in the world are still in the least developed country status

Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır hosted the Least Developed Countries Green Industrialization Facilitation Mechanism High-Level Dialogue meeting in New York, where he is attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

High-Level Meeting Held in New York

Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır hosted the LDC-GIF Mechanism High-Level Dialogue meeting held at the UN Headquarters in New York within the scope of the 81st UN General Assembly.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum, Turkey’s FAO Director-General Candidate Mehmet Mehdi Eker, and Zero Waste Head Samed Ağırbaş.

44 Countries Still in the Least Developed Category

Stating that the definition of the least developed country was made 55 years ago, Minister Kacır said that while 25 countries were in this category at that time, only 8 countries have been able to rise above this status over the passing years.

Kacır emphasized that today 44 countries in the world are still in the least developed country category and that these countries represent approximately 14 percent of the world population.

Emphasis on Economic Share and Development

It was stated that the 44 least developed countries, which account for a 14 percent share of the world population, hold a share of only 1 percent in the global economy.

It was noted that within the scope of the COP31 Summit, which Turkey will host in Antalya, the industrialization and green industrialization processes of these countries will be supported.
