NASA executives and experts shared the initial findings, data, and important observation results regarding the Artemis II mission with the public at the 77th International Astronautical Congress held in Antalya.
International Astronautical Congress Continues in Antalya
Under the coordination of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, hosted by the Turkish Space Agency and SAHA Istanbul, the 77th International Astronautical Congress is being held at the Antalya NEST Congress Center. Within the scope of the congress, a special session was held to release the initial information obtained through the Artemis II mission.
NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson, Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate Nicola Fox, Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations Lori Glaze, and Artemis Science Flight Operations Lead Kelsey Young participated as speakers in the session.
Artemis III Studies and the Goal of a Permanent Presence on the Moon
NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson stated that Artemis III studies are continuing with a target of 2027, expressing that each mission contributes to humanity's return to the lunar surface. Anderson noted that the observations of the Artemis II team offer a unique opportunity.
Anderson stated that six months after the mission, NASA will fully open its lunar science data archive, representing the beginning of a new era.
Effects of Deep Space on the Human Body Examined
Lori Glaze conveyed that Artemis investigations will provide a broad perspective in understanding the effects of deep space on the human body and in learning the possibilities of living away from Earth. Glaze emphasized that these studies lay the groundwork for humanity's return to the Moon.
Stating that the mission will provide great benefits in understanding the complex interaction between Earth, the Moon, and the Solar System, Glaze expressed that a new era of discovery is being entered with science and innovation.
Communication Blackout Experienced by the Orion Spacecraft
Nicola Fox explained that great joy was sparked when the Orion spacecraft reappeared with a total solar eclipse following a temporary electrical and communication blackout while passing to the far side of the Moon. Fox described this moment as unforgettable.
Fox stated that during the Artemis II mission duration, it was seen in real time how science can be successfully integrated into human spaceflights, and significant progress has been made compared to Artemis I.
Hundreds of Megabytes of Data and Thousands of Photos Collected
Kelsey Young announced that during the course of the Artemis II mission, more than 800 megabytes of data and 12,000 photographs were collected, and each frame will be used in scientific analyses. Young also shared the audio recorded by the astronauts during the flight.
