New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy Discusses Artificial Intelligence Rules
The New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy has begun evaluating new draft rules regulating the use of artificial intelligence in pharmacy practice.
The New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy has put forward new draft rules introducing detailed standards for the use of artificial intelligence and technology in pharmacy practices.
Artificial Intelligence Regulation
The New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy is addressing new draft rules that will regulate the use of artificial intelligence and other technologies in pharmacy practice. This move represents one of the first pharmacy regulatory frameworks at the state level to directly address artificial intelligence.
Scope and Implementation
The proposed rules fall under Chapter Ph 500, where pharmacy standards are reorganized. Specifically, Section Ph 522 covers all license holders utilizing technology in areas such as prescription processing, patient communications, and drug utilization review.
Pharmacist Responsibility
The core principle of the draft is that technology can support pharmacy operations but cannot replace the professional judgment of licensed personnel. Using technology to eliminate the legally required pharmacist review is prohibited.
Obligations and Oversight
The draft imposes significant responsibilities on pharmacy license holders, including pre-implementation assessments, a four-year record retention requirement, review of vendor contracts, and ongoing artificial intelligence governance.
