New Strategies Discussed Against Space Debris and Sustainability Problem
At the International Astronautical Congress, radiation-resistant electronic systems, maintenance and repair services, and global cooperation against the danger of orbital debris were discussed.
During a session held within the scope of IAC 2026, the rapidly growing space debris problem was addressed from scientific, technological, and international policy dimensions, and new solution searches were evaluated.
Key Participants of the Session
The session within the scope of IAC 2026 was attended by Enrico Chesta from CERN, Emmanuelle David from the EPFL Space Center, Gregoire Hauser from the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and Luc Piguet, CEO of ClearSpace.
Radiation-Induced Failures
Enrico Chesta from CERN stated that approximately half of the launched satellites experience technical problems before completing their lifespans, and that these problems can be prevented by 10 percent with appropriate radiation resistance strategies.
Maintenance and Service Infrastructure
ClearSpace CEO Luc Piguet emphasized that, just as in aviation and maritime, a complete industry offering in-orbit maintenance, repair, and refueling services for satellite operations must be established.
Environmental Sustainability
Emmanuelle David from the EPFL Space Center stated that sustainability should not only be about reducing orbital debris, but also protecting the environment on Earth by using life cycle assessments and eco-design.
Safe Access for Future Generations
Gregoire Hauser from the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs expressed that space sustainability brings together science, policy, and international cooperation, highlighting the importance of protecting safe access for future generations.
